English as a Second Language

English proficiency is a key piece to helping immigrants advance in the U.S. and reach their goals of stability and self-sufficiency. The Chelsea Collaborative supports our members to develop communication and cultural skills necessary to attain their personal, educational, employment, and other goals. Improved English language skills enable immigrants to secure employment in the U.S., pursue pathways to citizenship, apply for drivers’ licenses, fill out government forms, comply with local laws, interact with their child’s school, advocate for themselves, and much more.

The Chelsea Collaborative offers English as a Second Language courses for 200 community members each year. The program runs for 13 weeks and participants complete 40 hours of coursework using the popular education model. While students and teachers engage literacy and language skill building, class activities will be framed within the context of students' lives. Curriculum can be tailored based on the unique interests of each group of students. For instance, class topics could include tenant/landlord relationships, employment-related matters, how to call to report an accident, or how to be more active at your child's school. Students will also have opportunities to practice their language skills and network with other community members at informal coffee hours and other Chelsea Collaborative events.

Classes are offered for free to Chelsea Collaborative Members. If you are not a Member yet, you can join for $35. More information on Membership here.

Note: We currently have a waitlist for our Winter 2018 classes. Call the Collaborative at 617-889-6080 to be added to the list for future openings.
